I Really Do Like Snow

Everyone thinks the first snowfall of the season is special.

The trees are pristine, white and shiny.

Even if there’s just a dusting, kids still spend way too much time stuffing themselves into boots (too small – time for a new pair) and snow suits that make walking nearly impossible. Getting outside to throw a few snowballs or build a tiny snowman before the sun turns everything to mud and slush is a right of passage for those of us who live up north.

I even like shoveling snow. I’ve probably mentioned this previously, but shoveling is orderly and calming. My clean driveway is a point of honor. I just revel in the cold air and the white, white snow. Yes, we’ve had ice dams that have caused leaks and I’ve fallen on slick surfaces. These are just the minor costs of enjoying winter.

I don’t ski or skate anymore (though my family will probably argue that I never did either very well). You don’t even need a blizzard these days to complicate travel plans, definitely not on my “fun” list. I am grateful for a warm roof over my head. Without that luxury, I’m sure my love affair with winter would end quickly.

I’m lucky. I live in a winter climate and I enjoy it. I am grateful for so much. Snow is one of those gifts we usually ignore unless the ground is bare on Christmas Eve. It’s so easy to overlook the natural beauty around us this time of year. Remember, not every gift is wrapped in tinsel. Look out your windows and enjoy the view. Palm trees or snowmen, enjoy and Happy Holidays!
