Baby Steps

Are you sure your New Year’s resolution is in fact a resolution and not a road to failure?

Starting off (again) with long term, giant changes is more often a recipe for disaster than it is a realistic step in the right direction. Begin with just steps, baby steps.

Losing weight is a top goal for a huge number of us. There are so many diets that work. But, like many other ambitions, they are only successful if you truly buy into them long term. Take it one day at a time. Eat well today….just don’t celebrate that small victory with three chocolate chip cookies tomorrow. Believed me, I know that trick. Make your new food regime a habit. Make the changes slowly.

Whatever your resolution, take your trip to this goal in small increments. Give yourself time emotionally, mentally and physically to adjust to each small change, each victory. When that victory becomes a habit, move on to the next link in the chain. You may or may not lose 50 pounds in a few months. Instead, you may lose 50 pounds over two years. But, you will learn to keep it off. That means you can take this off your list and move on to another resolution.

Baby steps aren’t easy – for babies or for adults. Yet, they are how we learn, how we change, how we advance and improve our lives. Go ahead. Make a resolution. Begin walking – not running then stumbling – down that road to a better you.

So, what is my resolution? I am pledging to keep my blogs more about grandparenthood and grandchildren. I really hope you’ll stick with me as I take my own baby steps to being more focused. Good luck and Happy New Year to us all.
